Whether you’re having friends over on a Friday night or you’re throwing an epic holiday party, knowing the basics of making classic cocktails is a must. These simple classics never go out of style and are easy enough to mix up any time happy hour at your house becomes a necessity.

Below, you’ll find out how to master crafting classic cocktails in your own home. But before you do, we must insist that when you make them you always remember the following:
– Use the best ingredients
– Use the right tools
– Always drink responsibly
Without further ado, here are 5 classic cocktails you should know how to make!

1. Negroni
To make the classic Negroni, get your rocks glass ready. Fill up a mixing glass with ice and add 1 ½ ounces of quality gin, 1 ounce vermouth, and ¾ ounce of Campari. Let it sit about 30 seconds to get icy cold, then strain it into your rocks glass full of ice. Twist a fresh strip of orange to get the oil essence and then garnish with a few thin slices of the fruit for a classic presentation.

2. Sidecar
A Sidecar is one classy cocktail classic you should be drinking! Get a coupe glass and you’ll be set. Then wet part of the rim with fresh lemon juice. Quickly dip it into sugar. Meanwhile, put 2 ounces of brandy, ¾ ounce triple sec, and ¾ ounce of lemon juice into your cocktail shaker, fill with ice, and shake it up until the outside is very cold. Strain into your awaiting sugar-rimmed glass.

3. Old Fashioned
With a name like Old Fashioned, you know it’s a classic! Get a rocks glass and stir 1 teaspoon granulated sugar, 3 dashes of bitters, and 2 teaspoons of warm water into it until the sugar is mostly dissolved. Toss in 3 ice cubes, then add 2 ounces of rye whiskey. Stir to chill the mixture, then garnish with a Maraschino cherry and orange wedge. Take it to the next level with a glass that can even hold your cigar!

4. Gin and Tonic
A clear choice for a classic win, you can’t go wrong with Gin and Tonic. Traditionally, it’s served in a highball filled with ice. You’ll add 2 ounces of quality brand gin (like Tanqueray) to the ice-filled glass, then squeeze in anywhere from 1 to 3 wedges of lime to suit your tastes. Fill the rest of the way with tonic water (about 3 to 4 ounces) and stir to bring it all together.

5. Manhattan
One of the most distinguished classic cocktails, the Manhattan is a sophisticated drink everyone will love. Make it for a group of friends tonight! In a mixing class, add 1 cup of bourbon, 2/3 cup of vermouth, and 4 dashes of Angostura bitters. Once combined, split the concoction up between 4 awaiting rocks glasses filled with ice. Don’t forget to garnish each with an orange twist wrapped around a fresh cherry to complete the experience.
